Ignacio Fernández Solla

Ignacio has developed his career in façade design and technology. Starting in 1991 he was part of a cladding contractor and then of a façade systems supplier. Since 2004 he leads the Façade Engineering team in Arup Spain, with ongoing projects in Europe, Latin America, Middle East and the USA.

Ignacio supports design teams in the specification and construction of building envelopes. His experience is focused on lightweight and energy-efficient envelope solutions: curtain wall systems, double skin façades, rain screen façades, photovoltaic façades, operational energy control and responsive façade systems.

He has participated in projects as Telefónica HQ in Madrid, the refurbishment of Palacio de Cibeles in Madrid, Bridge Pavilion in Zaragoza, Qatar Faculty of Islamic Studies in Doha, Santander Call Centre in Querétaro, Ashgabat Olympic City in Turkmenistan or Congress Centre in Bogotá. His team is currently working in projects with Norman Foster, Zaha Hadid, Jean Nouvel, Richard Rogers, Juan Herreros and Richard Meier, among others.

Ignacio has been visiting lecturer of building envelope systems at the School of Architecture, Princeton University, and at Universidad Europea de Madrid. He participates at Masters in Universidad Europea, Universidad Politécnica de Madrid and Universidad del País Vasco. With Nuria Martin of CIEMAT he has written a book on building-integrated photovoltaics, “La envolvente fotovoltaica en la Arquitectura”
