Wei Yap believes that diverse and sustainable architecture is pivotal to advocating design literacy. Inherent to this is his belief that architecture can serve society and engage with members of the public to foster productive discourse on the built environment.
Wei Yap is a Director at SAA Architects and Surbana Jurong. He is the design lead of the SAA design team with local and international experience, working across a wide range of typologies. He drives innovation through research-led design and with a strong appreciation of commercial building parameters. Methodical and creative in his approach, Wei Yap ensures that each project achieves the most effective business and design performance outcomes within an increasingly demanding design service industry. His role at Surbana Jurong Global Architecture incorporates management of the group’s business operations and design in China, India, Malaysia, Indonesia, Vietnam and North Asia.
His design work has garnered prominent awards, including the R.A.I.A. National Award for Public Architecture, WAN and the Green Apple for ESD innovation in Malaysia. Wei Yap has held design teaching positions at the National University of Singapore, Deakin University, RMIT University, Monash University, University of Newcastle, and the University of Melbourne since 2003 and has mentored a generation of young and successful designers.
