Director, Arup
Graham Dodd is an engineer who has worked with glass since 1988, designing facades, structural glass assemblies and sculptural installations around the world. He now leads Arup’s team of materials experts and as an Arup Fellow, promotes excellence in design and the use of materials.
Graham studied Engineering Science at the University of Liverpool before undertaking roles as a design engineer for a structural glass manufacturer, a materials database developer and a domestic appliance design engineer. He joined Arup in 1994.
Graham has a great deal of experience as a façade engineer designing the first large outdoor public glass floor and introducing the use of heat strengthened glass to flooring applications. For many years he has worked with industry to improve the specification of glass for high quality applications including the control of anisotropy in toughened glass. Notable projects include re-glazing with re-use and recycling of glass at Lloyd’s of London and supporting the design and engineering of the complex curved structural glass and steel hybrid structures that make up the Bombay Sapphire Distillery Glasshouses.
Graham is recognised as an expert in structural glass and façade design having published a number of articles on the topic. He is a Chartered Engineer, Member of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Chairman and Fellow of the Society of Facade Engineering and member of the International Association for Bridge and Structural Engineering (IABSE). He represents the British Standards Institute on the European working group for structural use of glass.
