Director, ABRD Architects
Anupam Bansal (b. 1969) is an architect, urbanist and academician who co-founded ABRD Architects along with his fellow classmate Rajesh Dongre. Since its inception in 1996 ABRD Architects have won several architectural competitions like the Alliance Francaise de Delhi, Minto Hall Redevelopment at Bhopal, National Centre for Biological Sciences – Tata Institute of Fundamental Research at Bangalore, and the South Asian University at New Delhi.
Anupam maintains a commitment to teaching, practice and writing. He has taught design and theory of architecture at various institutions in Delhi like the School of Planning & Architecture, Sushant School of Art and Architecture and the former TVB School of Habitat Studies. He also visits institutions such as KRVIA Mumbai, CEPT Ahmedabad for various juries and workshops. Currently he is Adjunct Professor of Architecture at Dehradun Institute of Architecture.
Anupam received his Bachelor of Architecture degree from School of Planning and Architecture, New Delhi. He holds a Master of Architecture degree from Kansas State University, Manhattan USA where he specialized in History, Theory and Criticism. The master’s program gave him a strong foundation to understand and critique design from a cultural and social perspective.
Anupam has written and lectured on various aspects of the history and urban development of Delhi and India. He co-authored ‘The Delhi Architecture Guide’ along with Malini Kochupillai. This well illustrated and mapped book is the first of its kind architectural guide of an Indian City, which covers the entire timeline of Delhi’s architecture from Sultanate, Islamic, Mughal, Colonial and Post-Independence Modern and contemporary architecture. His other writings include ‘Extending Imperial Delhi: the Diplomatic Enclave of Chanakyapuri’, ‘Housing Types And Their Evolution: Delhi 1900-2014’, ‘Pastiche Architecture: On the architectural Surges of Hafeez Contractor’ and ‘Architecture in India since 1900’, currently under print for the Berg Encyclopaedia of Design.
