Co-Founding Director, dRMM
Alex de Rijke is a Co-Founding Director of dRMM, having established the practice in 1995 with Philip Marsh and Sadie Morgan. He is responsible for leading the design, construction, and delivery of the studio’s timber projects, including Kingsdale School, Tower of Love, Sliding House, Maggie’s Oldham and the 2017 Stirling Prize winning Hastings Pier.
Alex conducts ongoing research into low carbon materials, technologies and methods of construction. Through his leadership, dRMM is a recognised pioneer and authority on engineered timber design and construction. In 2013 de Rijke collaborated with the American Hardwood Export Council and ARUP engineers to create the world’s first cross-laminated hardwood timber. This was launched with Endless Stair, dRMM’s London Design Festival installation at Tate Modern and followed with Maggie’s Oldham (2017) the world’s first hardwood timber CLT building. Alex’s lifelong commitment to timber has been recognised through his position as Structural Timber Awards Pioneer of the Year (2022).
