Erik Volz

Associate, Renzo Piano Building Workshop

Erik Volz, Associate Architect at Renzo Piano Building Workshop for the past 25 years, is a graduate of the University of Stuttgart (Dipl. Ing. 1985 – 1991) as an architect and planner.

He has been trained in energy and sustainability, including LEED AP BD+C and PassivHaus, and his work is based on the concepts of transparency and environmental design. This synthesis is achieved through a constant search for innovation and quality of construction in Europe and beyond. The highlight of his work is the construction of complex and efficient glass facades for large projects worldwide, as well as the adapted integration of photovoltaic modules in the context of “positive energy and zero carbon” projects. An increasingly important challenge and moral obligation that is often found in the ‘outer skin’ of a project.

Erik Volz’s experience and philosophy are based on his many years of experience at RPBW, working closely with Renzo Piano.

His architectural approach is specifically driven by a relentless interdisciplinary work and a rich confrontation between different visions, languages and cultures.

Emblematic projects for which he has been responsible are Fondation Beyeler Museum, Basel, Switzerland (1992 – 2022), Potsdamer Platz, Berlin, Germany (1992 – 2000), Peek&Cloppenburg Department Store, Cologne, Germany (1998 – 2005), New York Times Headquarters, NY, USA (2000 – 2007), KT Tower, Seoul, Korea (2010 – 2015), Mareterra Sea Extension, Monaco, Monaco (2014 – present)
