Maria Buhigas San José

Chief Architect, Barcelona City Council

Maria Buhigas is an architect and urban who has run her own firm since 2014, specialised in urban strategy and urban planning. She holds a degree in Architecture from the ETSAB (UPC) and a Master of Science in Urban Planning from Columbia University (New York). She is a regular collaborator with UN-Habitat on projects in Colombia, Mexico, Peru, Paraguay, Ecuador and Cuba. She is also an associate professor for the Department of Geography at the UAB and a member of the Board of Trustees of Fundació Catalunya Europa – Llegat Pasqual Maragall. Previously, she served as part of the team at Barcelona Regional (1999-2013), where she led the Urban Strategy department (2006-13). She has been a member of the Scientific Advisory Board of the European agency ESPON (2017-19) and a councillor for the Barcelona City Council (2019-20).
