Stig Mikkelsen has more than four decades of experience shaping complex architecture where detailed façade design, sustainability, and human needs are integrated from concept to construction. As Founding Partner of Mikkelsen Arkitekter, he has led award-winning projects across healthcare, research, workplaces, and cultural architecture.
His work demonstrates façades as both technical innovation and artistic expression. Relevant use of materials – and “the good detail” is fundamental in a holistic response. Healthcare projects such as the Steno Diabetes Centres and the Bispebjerg Laboratory & Logistics Building show how façades can enhance comfort and healing through careful daylight- and energy design.
Façade challenges of today are far beyond their technical role. Stig believes in “Innovation trough collaboration”. Human well-being, scientific innovation, and cultural identity grow out of great teamwork. In this keynote, Stig Mikkelsen will share a series of case studies where the building envelope is central to the design vision.
In 2022, his lifelong contribution to Danish architecture was recognized with the Eckersberg Medal, awarded by H.M. Queen Margrethe II.
